A True Pair of French Vitrines by GERVAIS-MAXIMILIEN-EUGENE DURAND

G. DURAND, PARIS

A fine true pair of French mahogany, goncalo alves and gilt bronze mounted Vitrines by G. Durand. The thick rectangular breche d’alep marble top with moulded edge, above a single glazed door enclosing adjustable glass shelves with glazed sides, standing on short cabriole legs ending in gilt metal sabots. Original mercury gilding to mounts.

Stamped variously G. Durand with the ‘Marqué au fer’, and numbered 1 & 2.

Specialising in the production of 18th century style furniture of the finest quality, Gervais-Maximillien-Eugène Durand (b.1839) exhibited at the Universelle Exposition of Paris in 1889, gaining a silver medal, and the praise of the judges, who compared their work with that of Beurdeley and Dasson With his son Frederic-Louis joining him around 1890, the firm changed its name to Durand et Fils.

The well cast and chased case with urn finial above a female mask, with an enamel dial with roman numerals and pierced hands below, flanked by scrolling ribbon, acanthus swags and pierced grilles. The eight day movement with Brocot escapement, rack striking the hour & half hour on a bell.

Pair of Patinated Bronze Spill Holders

A pair of 19th century patinated bronze spill holders in the form of a beggar and his wife. He leaning forward resting on a tree stump with his cap in his hands, a wicker basket on his back. His wife walking aided with a stick leaning forward carrying a bag on her back. Both supported on square sienna marble plinths and with original dark patination.

Antique French Empire Marble & Gilt Bronze Candlesticks

A pair of early 19th century, French Empire, Carrera marble, gilt and patinated bronze candlesticks of large size. The bronze figure of a putti standing on a circular plinth holding a finely cast and chased stem with single candle sconce, with an ormolu mounted stepped marble base. The sconce drilled for electricity.

A late 19th century, mahogany & marquetry inlaid, Edwards & Roberts quality display cabinet on stand of serpentine form. The swan neck pediment above a moulded frieze with a pair of serpentine glazed doors below, enclosing a polished interior with glazed sides. The base with a pair of frieze drawers standing on four square tapering legs ending in spade feet and united by a platform stretcher.

A late 19th century, french, oeil de vermeil and ormolu mounted guéridon. The oval top with radiating veneers and ormolu edge, above a shaped frieze mounted with floral swags, the front with pull out slide and oak lined drawer. Standing on four slender cabriole shaped legs ending in sabots. Original gilding to mounts. Knee mounts stamped ‘JH’ to the reverse.

A late 19th century, french, gilt bronze and marble lyre clock garniture. The circular enamel dial painted with floral swags and with grid iron knife edge pendulum set with paste bezel, below an apollo sun burst and floral mounted marble lyre. The eight day movement, rack striking the hour & half hour on a bell. Flanked by a pair of three light candelabra above turned marble bodies with paste centre band.  Movement and pendulum stamped 45061.

Pair of French Mahogany & Gilt Gaines

Attributed to Francois Linke index number 56

A matched pair of late 19th century, Paris, mahogany and gilt bronze mounted Gaines. The square marble tops, one rouge griotte the other verde antico, with pierced metal gallery, above panelled friezes and acanthus scroll mounts, each stand with one concealed drawer, released by spring, and a slide to side, supported by four slender square tapering legs ending in gilt sabots and united by up-curved stretcher with central finial. Mounts stamped ‘EB’ to reverse. It is described as a stand or gaine and titled by Linke as Pedestal Louis XVI acajou et bronzes dorés, index number 56. It was available with or without a slide and a drawer, priced between 400 and 500 francs.

A late 19th century, French, Louis XVI style gilt bronze and carrera marble clock. The circular dial with roman numeral, inset gilt cylinder surmounted by an urn with floral finial, and with a panel under of frolicking putti, supported by turned gilt columns standing on a plinth base with gilt frieze and toupie feet. The eight day movement numbered 4713, with Brocot suspension, rack striking the hour & half hour on a bell. Dial repainted.

Antique Georgian Rosewood Davenport Attributed to Gillows

A George IV rosewood davenport attributed to Gillows. The pierced brass gallery above a rising leather writing surface concealing small drawers and pen try to the side. The top sliding forward above a base with panelled sides the right side with a single door concealing four graduated drawers with campaign brass handles, standing on four turned bun feet with concealed castors.

Antique Grand Tour Bronze of the Place Vendôme Column

A mid 19th century patinated bronze model of the Place Vendôme column. The figure of Napoleon standing atop the spiralling column with square black slate base.

The original column was started in 1806 at Napoleon’s direction to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz, and completed in 1810. The spiralling column is covered in 425 bas-relief bronze plates constructed out of cannons taken from the combined armies of Europe.
